Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are devices worn inside your shoes (shoe inserts) that maximize the health of your feet or help them heal from foot or ankle problems.

Dr. Frank helps you obtain custom orthotics based on the specific foot concerns you struggle with and the structure of your feet, ensuring maximum comfort. Over-the-counter orthotics are also available, but custom varieties provide better support.

Which conditions can custom orthotics help treat?

Custom orthotics, available with Dr. Frank, can help treat (or prevent) the following conditions and more:

  • Calluses
  • Corns
  • High arches
  • Flat feet
  • Bunions
  • Foot tendinitis
  • Hammertoes
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Forefoot pain
  • Runner’s knee
  • Ankle sprains
  • Stiff big toe
  • Diabetes-related foot complications
  • Foot pain
  • Heel pain
  • Abnormal gait
  • Foot or ankle deformities
  • Foot ulcers
  • Shin splints

Signs of a problem include pain while walking, severe or ongoing foot and/or ankle discomfort, swelling, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Am I a candidate for custom orthotics?

Dr. Frank examines your feet and ankles, discusses your medical history, and reviews your symptoms to determine if custom orthotics are right for you. He may suggest blood testing, X-rays, an MRI, an ultrasound, or other diagnostic procedures to determine how to best treat your condition and personalize your treatment approach.

What should I expect when wearing custom orthotics?

Dr. Frank takes measurements to create custom orthotics that match the shape and contours of your feet. He creates an impression of your feet or completes a computerized foot analysis. When your custom orthotics are ready, simply place them inside of comfortable, well-fitting shoes and wear them as instructed by Dr. Frank.

Orthotics can help you manage bothersome symptoms of foot and ankle problems, but it might take several weeks for your feet to fully adjust to the orthotics. They can last for years, but you’ll eventually need to replace custom orthotics.

The benefits of wearing custom orthotics include less foot or ankle pain, improved mobility, faster healing, less inflammation, and a better quality of life. Orthotics help prevent further podiatry concerns. Follow up with Dr. Frank to optimize your results. You might also be a candidate for laser treatment, injections, shockwave therapy, or minimally invasive surgery.
